Josh Gray | Nashville Americana Singer-Songwriter
Though born in San Francisco, Nashville Americana singer-songwriter Josh Gray grew up thousands of miles away in Maryland. He got his first guitar at age 16 but didn’t play his first live show until 15 years later. When asked what took so long, he simply says, “I wasn’t ready.”
That patience—and a commitment to getting things right—comes through in Josh Gray’s music. His thoughtful, poetic lyrics explore life, struggle, love, politics, and the human experience, staying with you long after the songs end. Blending Americana, folk, blues, country, and rock, Josh Gray is a storyteller, protest singer, and poet whose music bridges generations and genres while creating a sound all his own.
From Maryland to Nashville
In 2015, Josh Gray released his self-titled debut EP, recorded in Frederick, Maryland—just one block from the coffee shop where a friend first dared him to play his first show. That same year, Gray put nearly 30,000 miles on his car, traveling throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia to play shows and open mics, sometimes performing seven nights a week.
Looking to grow as an artist and musician, Gray moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2016. There, he brought together some of the best musicians in Music City and formed his band, Josh Gray and the Dark Features. Without the money to record an album, the band turned to crowdfunding and surpassed its goal, funding the record through the support of their fans.
Songs of the Highway
“Songs of the Highway” was recorded to tape at the renowned Bomb Shelter in East Nashville. The album received glowing reviews in Nashville and beyond, introducing Gray’s blend of Americana, roots rock, country, folk, blues, and rock to an even wider audience.
The album earned Josh Gray a distribution deal in the Netherlands and was named one of the top albums of the decade by Hi-Tones Record Store in Rocklin, California. In the Netherlands, “Songs of the Highway” was voted one of the Top 10 albums of 2019 out of 600 albums at Cd-afdeling Warenhuis Vanderveen Assen.
Walk Alone
In 2022, Josh Gray launched another successful crowdfunding campaign to record his third album, “Walk Alone”. This time, Gray partnered with CRS in the Netherlands to distribute the album to record stores throughout Europe.
Released in 2023, “Walk Alone” reached #8 on the Euro Americana charts and #1 on the Dutch Americana & Roots Top13 chart. The album has received critical acclaim worldwide, with radio DJs playing Gray’s music weekly from New Zealand to Norway.
